Arade river: Portimão to Silves

The route

The Arade flows into the sea between Portimão and Ferragudo. Upstream, the river winds through farmland and orchards to Silves, whose castle overlooks the town. The trip from Portimão to Silves is about 15 km.

How to visit

River cruises leave from Portimão’s riverfront (and some from Ferragudo or Alvor). Because the upper river is shallow, departure times depend on the tide; a typical round trip takes about 3.5 hours, including about 1.5 hours ashore in Silves. Departure towns: Portimão, Ferragudo and Alvor.

Best time

The river is sheltered, so this is a good choice on days when the sea is too rough for coastal trips. Trips run on the tide, so times change daily — check the operator’s timetable rather than assuming a fixed hour.

Safety & rules

Wear the life jacket provided and stay seated while the boat is moving. In Silves, keep to the time agreed with the crew so the boat can return on the tide.
