The river

At its mouth the Guadiana separates Vila Real de Santo António (Portugal) from Ayamonte (Spain). Upstream lie Castro Marim and its castle and, further north, Alcoutim facing the Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana.

How to visit

Full-day cruises leave from Vila Real de Santo António and sail upriver to the Foz de Odeleite, with a lunch stop at a riverside farm (Quinta do Rio) on some trips. The “Rota Fronteiriça” cruises pass Castro Marim and Ayamonte. Cruises also run from Alcoutim, and a river ferry links Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte. Departure towns: Vila Real de Santo António, Monte Gordo (pick-ups) and Alcoutim.

How to visit

Best time

The river is sheltered and trips run on a timetable set by each operator — check dates, as some cruises are seasonal. Spring and autumn are pleasant for the countryside; summer is hot inland, so bring water and sun protection.

Practical & safety

You are on an international border: carry an ID document if a trip calls at the Spanish side. Wear the life jacket provided and follow the crew’s instructions when boarding at the pontoon.
