Where is it?

Ponta da Piedade is a headland about 2.5 km south of Lagos. From the clifftop car park, boardwalks and viewpoints run along the top (much of it is easy walking), and a staircase of roughly 180 steps leads down to the water. The lighthouse on the point has worked since 1913 (light 51 m above sea level) and is not open to visitors.

How to visit

By boat: grotto trips leave from Lagos marina and the Avenida dos Descobrimentos riverfront (typically about 1–1.5 h), and small local boats also take visitors from the foot of the Ponta da Piedade stairs on shorter trips. By kayak or SUP: guided tours start from Lagos beaches and paddle in and out of the arches. Departure towns: Lagos and Luz.

How to visit

Best time & sea

Trips run all year when the sea allows, with the most departures from spring to autumn. Morning light and calmer water are usually best for photos and for entering the grottoes. Swell from the west or south-west can cancel or shorten trips — operators decide on the day.

Safety & rules

Go with a licensed operator and wear the life jacket provided. Stay back from cliff edges and do not sit at the foot of the cliffs: rockfalls happen along this coast. Kayaks and SUPs should only enter caves with a guide and in calm water.

Safety & rules

Families & accessibility

The clifftop boardwalks are the easiest way to see the formations without stairs or a boat. Boarding small boats needs a step from a pontoon or the stairs, so check each operator’s accessibility and age notes in our listings — where an operator does not publish it, we mark it unknown.
