Benagil Boat Trips
from €19.80 · departure times published
On the Lagoa coast between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra, next to the small fishing beach of Benagil. The cave is only reachable from the sea; from the clifftop you can only look down through the hole in the roof.
By boat: short trips leave from Benagil beach itself, longer ones (1–3 h) from Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra, Portimão, Ferragudo, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos. By kayak or SUP: guided tours from Benagil, Marinha, Carvalho or Ferragudo beaches. On foot: the Seven Hanging Valleys trail passes above the cave.

Since 2024 the Portimão harbour authority (Capitania) has regulated the cave: no landing on the cave beach and no swimming into the cave; motorboats may only enter briefly with a limited number at the same time; kayaks and SUPs must go with licensed guides. Rules can change — your operator will brief you.
May to September, mornings around 10:00–13:00 usually give the best light and the calmest sea. Late May, June and September are less crowded than July–August. From November to March there are fewer departures and trips depend on the weather.

Trips are cancelled when the swell is too big (roughly above 1.5 m). Operators normally rebook or refund — each one has its own cancellation policy, shown on its listing when published. Check the IPMA sea forecast before you go.
Beach departures mean wading to the boat. Fast RIBs are not suitable for pregnancy or back problems. Bigger catamarans leaving from marinas are easier to board. Always ask the operator about children, age limits and reduced mobility.
