The Ria Formosa Natural Park covers about 18,400 ha, of which around 11,000 ha are lagoon, and is also a Ramsar wetland and part of the Natura 2000 network. Five barrier islands separate it from the ocean: Barreta (Ilha Deserta, with Cabo de Santa Maria — the southernmost point of mainland Portugal), Culatra (including the Farol settlement), Armona, Tavira and Cabanas.
Public ferries leave Olhão for Armona, Culatra and Farol. From Faro (Cais das Portas do Mar) boats go to Ilha Deserta and to Culatra/Farol. From Tavira, boats leave from the town and from Quatro Águas for Ilha de Tavira. Water taxis, guided lagoon and bird-watching boat tours, and kayak or SUP tours run from Faro, Olhão, Fuseta, Tavira and Cabanas.

Tides are semi-diurnal (two highs and two lows a day) with a range of about 1–3 m, so some channels and sandbanks are exposed at low tide and routes change with the tide — operators plan around it. Autumn and winter (about October to March) are the main season for wintering waders and other water birds. Summer brings the most ferry and beach departures.
This is a protected area: keep to paths and boardwalks on the islands, do not disturb birds or trample the dunes and salt marsh, and take your rubbish back with you. The islands have no roads for cars. Check the last ferry back before you go.

The lagoon is sheltered, so trips here are often calmer than on the open coast — a good option for families. Ferries and small boats have steps when boarding; check each operator’s accessibility and age notes in our listings (unknown where not published).
